I am from and grew up in small town Iowa. A traffic jam would be defined by 2 cars having to wait at the traffic light behind a tractor. It is inspirational to see how people find their paths in life from modest or challenging beginnings. I define success more by what people give than what they made or collected in life.
Here are 2 Nobel prize winners from Iowa, both seem to have a simple hands on approach to things and matter of fact way to life that I appreciate.
- Norman Borlaug helped feed the world and many have argued saved a billions of lives according to one source. He was the great grand child of Norwegian immigrants. Borlaug just passed away at the age of 95. Here is a great Obituary from the Economist
- Thomas Cech Helped further the science of biology by studying the transcription process in cells. His grand father was an immigrant shoemaker who came to the US in 1913
Some pretty interesting people who have demonstrable achievements and have potentially furthered the human condition. Go Iowa :)
